18/11/2009 - SHOWBIZWORKS PAYS TRIBUTE TO LEGEND OF DANCE - Tap dance legend Jimmy Clark passes away

Showbizworks would like to pay tribute to legendary tap dancer Jimmy Clark, who has passed away last weekend. One half of the legendary Clark Brothers, Jimmy along with his brother Steve, who was at his bedside, are probably the last of an entertainment era that included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Junior Dean Martin and many more. The Clark brothers have been in show business for over seventy years. Born and brought up during the depression in the southern states of America, they first went on the road when they were four years old.
As dancers they witnessed the birth of Las Vegas, played the Cotton Club in Harlem and went to Havana before Castro came down from the hills. They were friends with Josephine Baker, Sugar Ray Robinson and Frank Sinatra. They shared bills with Gypsy Rose Lee, Elvis Presley, the Beatles and virtually every star in between. Sammy Davis Junior was their cousin and they taught the British pop groups of the Swinging Sixties how to dance.
Steve Clark chronicled their experiences in a book called Living Legends. In it he gives an unrivalled insight into what it was like to be born into a time when boxing, singing or dancing were the only legitimate ways in which a black boy could hope to escape poverty. He paints a vivid picture of the days when the American theatres and clubs were run exclusively by gangsters and when segregation was still commonplace. The entertainment industry back then was very different, when a handshake took the place of a contract and sadly if you were black and top of the bill, you still had to arrive via the back door of the Las Vegas venue. To see them in action click The Clark Brothers

As someone who has been inspired and encouraged in the early days of my career by the Clark Brothers I would like to offer my personal condolences to Steve and to thank him for his support and generosity with his time. I feel honoured to have known Jimmy and am sure that he is tap dancing in heaven......
Marina Blore, Director Showbizworks.com
